DvdCrate is an online Disc (we use Disc for DVD, BluRay, HD-DVD, etc.) enclopedia and catalog system.
This means basically that DvdCrate has two purposes; * Be a reference site for media Discs. Currently DvdCrate supports: BluRay, Dvd, DvdAudio, HdDvd, LaserDisc, VideoCD, and UMD * Be a service that helps you manage your collections
DvdCrate lets you break up your collections into several different "Crates". These crates as logical separators for your collection, so you can organize and better manage the states. Currently DvdCrate has these "Crates": Owned, Ordered, Loaned, Viewed and Wishlist
The Owned is defined as: Discs that you have that you are the owner of. When you put a Disc into your Owned crate collection you can optionally supply the purchase details for purchase tracking.
The Ordered is defined as: Discs that you have ordered but have not yet arrived. When you put a Disc into your Ordered crate collection you can optionally supply the order details, including tracking Number. Once a Disc is in your Order crate you will see a button that will move it into your Owned (once the Disc arrives)
The Loaned is defined as: Discs that you own by have lent out to people. This helps you ensure you get your loans back and lets you see history of loans and perhaps that Steve who has loaned Batman: Begins six times might get that as a Birthday present. When you put a Disc into your Loaned list you can optionally supply the loaned info, including an email address that then allows you to quickly send an email reminder to the loanee.
The Viewed is defined as: Discs that you have viewed, they may (or may not) be in any other Crate. This is a used to show your viewing habits for data mining later to suggest like or random movies for viewing parties.
The Wishlist is defined as: Discs that you don't own, but may have seen, but wish that you owned. This is intended as a list that can be mailed to potential gift buyers as a pick list of suggestions.
The Search bar will search all Disc's in the system. If you are logged in, the results will include a small icon to show you what Crates each Disc found are in. You naturally can click on the Disc and view the details and put that Disc into other Crates (ie Viewed or Loaned) if you like.
DvdCrate has about 150k Discs, but on occasion there will be Disc's that you are looking for that are not found. DvdCrate allows for both User Submission and User Edit so we can collaboratively build the database in a Wiki style fashion. It would be appreciated if when you are looking for a Disc and you find it not in DvdCrate that you submit it for the reviewers to build on and approve for the other users to then find.
